Did you know that as of this month Microsoft will randomly select customers and disable Basic Authentication on their Exchange Online services? While from a pure security perspective username and password authentication is outdated, you may still have issues with devices that can only support username and password authentication. For example legacy business applications, multifunction printers, CNC machines and other devices that still work, but may not get an update to support different forms of authentication any time soon.
When using Zimbra you are in control of what authentication methods you want to enable for your users. Zimbra supports 2FA out of the box, but you can also implement your own custom authentication for all protocols (Web/IMAP/SMTP… etc). Zimbra can also authenticate against Active Directory out of the box and for partners we offer a way to authenticate against Azure AD.
If you are not ready for ditching basic authentication and are you using Exchange Online from Office 365? For the coming months Microsoft will allow you to re-enable basic authentication, but only once and only for a few months. After that you can use Zimbra as an authentication bridge between your devices and applications that require basic authentication and your Microsoft cloud. You can install Zimbra easily using our automated installer. Should you need to, you can set-up forwarding and Sieve filters in Zimbra to work-around the modern authentication requirements in the Microsoft cloud.
